how do I get my toddler to sleep in a big boys bed?
I have just found out I am pregnant. The new baby is due 30th July 2008. I already have a 16 month old son that is still in his cot, but want to use that cot for my new baby after about 3-4 months in the bassinett. He already has a big boys bed in his room next to his cot but when I try to put him in it for a sleep he just cries and gets out. When Should i make the transition? Before the new baby is born or after? He will be 2 years old when the baby is born.
So its going to be November next year that you need the cot, at the earliest. He'll be nearly 3 by then. We put our son into a child-sized bed when he was about this age, with his cot right up against it with the side down. If he felt insecure he could climb into the cot, not that he did unless in play. Moving youngsters into a big bed is a huge step for them. They feel insecure and that scares them. He's obviously not ready now and I wouldn't keep trying until nearer the time you actually need him to transfer. He will be that much more mature by then and better able to understand that the baby will need somewhere to sleep. At the moment he just isn't ready. Your baby will be OK in the bassinet until he/she is able to sit up, so in theory could stay there until 6 months or so, plenty of time for your son to get used to the idea of another child in the house and may want to "give" the baby the baby cot and sleep in his "own special bed". You could do it at Christmas-time, and make it extra-special and hang a stocking on the end of his big bed with some safe small toys in (don't mention that Santa may come and bring presents into his room, thats likely to just freak him out; the idea of a complete stranger he's never seen in his room at night!)
Just a thought, is his bed-to-be snugged up against the wall on one side and blocked in on the other so he feels surrounded and protected? If not, try to get it re-positioned to make it look like a safe place to be. He'll get there but there's no point in doing it now, its too soon for both of you to be upset about it. Congratulations on your pregnancy and remember your son is still the baby at the moment and needs you to see that. All the best.
