How to wean a 3 year old from a bottle?
Okay, so this is not for me but for a friend. If you don't have anything good to say dont say anything at all.
My friend's 3 year old girl still has a bottle, and it's time to get her off of it. Her mom agrees and has tried, but nothing she's done has worked. We tried the whole "big girls drink from big girl cups, and bottles are for little babies" thing, but she just smiles and says "then i'm not a big girl". The bottle at night occasionally makes her wet the bed, which is obviously a pain in the neck when she's been potty trained for nearly a year or so. She also loses it, and then cries for it until mom has to go out and buy another one. We've tried replacing it with a blanket as a security thing, but she has too many favorite blankets so it doesn't work. She loses teddy bears.
We don't know what to do...help? XD She's a really smart little girl but just does not want to give up the bottle apparently, even if it's causing more harm than good right now.
Have a visit from the "Bottle Fairy".
Same concept as the "Tooth Fairy", but you gather up all the bottles, put them in a pretty gift bag and leave it by the door. Next morning, a great toy is in the bag.
REALLY PLAY IT UP!!!
Tell her how great it is that the "Bottle Fairy" is coming. How great it is that the bottles are going to babies. When she sees the toy, play that up too.
When she whines for bottles, point at the toy and tell her the "Bottle Fairy" took them to the babies and gave her a toy.
At this point, the kid is playing you.
Really, she knows you won't enforce the "no bottle" rule, and isn't even intimidated anymore.
