are u having a baby shower? if so, i would wait until after shower to see what is left; u can also usually return some things you get to many of and get something(s)u can use and save a buck or two...i bottle feed, but i LOVE the boppy; it takes such a weight off of your back to be able to help support baby when you are feeding--u will also need at least 2 covers (if you buy the cotton ones, they are cheapest and you can always put a thick soft blanket over it if it is colder..) it can also be used for other things as baby gets older--help sitting up, my LO likes to lay in it with it rounded up like a donut..LOL, tummy time propping, etc...; don't get too much in nb size depending on size and shape of your baby you may or may not even be able to use them! again if you leave the tags and keep receipts you can return what you can't use (i would do that with everything except a couple of everything to wash b4 baby comes home so u can get your money back if that is a strong concern)..i also suggest a pack of gerber prefold diapers for burp clothes, not as pretty but will really take a big mess! i only have one pack, my girl is a spitter, and i have not needed more than that and i do think you need a few absorbent (rather than just cute) bibs in case yours is a spitter!...you will need some sort of diaper bag, outfit for baby pic in hosp if you want to have nb pics made...you MUST have a rear facing carseat to bring baby home, most hosp will check b4 they let you leave...i love the ones with the bases, much easier to get in and out of and you get them in right and they stay that way...don't have to worry about improperly restraining seat in a hurry....
even in hot weather, due to circulatory immaturity babies hands and esp feet get cold so i would buy the smallest, tightest socks you can find, bc i found that although i had a large variety, many still fall off of her feet and she is a little over a month old (7lb 6 at birth); u might want to consider a pack of hand mitts as a lot of babies scratch up their face regularly at first, if not you can probly make do with some socks over her hands; one of those baby care kits with a brush and a set of baby nail clippers etc... there are a million diff combos, so only get the one that has onlywhat you need) also get a thermometer...rectal is most accurate, and go ahead and get some baby tylenol, ibuprofen, benadryl, and mylicon so u have in case you need it in the middle of the night (always check with doc first b4 giving, they have someone on call even at night) buying generics will save you a lot of money, can get them anywhere, but walmart or something similar will probly be cheapest,if unsure, ask the pharmacist to help you find the generics...same thing, much, much, cheaper...u may consider a 'swaddleme' swaddler from babies r us ( i am sure you can find them elsewhere as well, they are made by kiddopotamus--they are very soft (i only had the cotton ones) and they are a lot cheaper than some of the other brands out there and they work well if you follow the instructions 
) they keep baby from being able to kick out of a less than perfect swaddle (great for us new moms)--maybe only buy ones until u see if it works for your baby, some hate it, some absolutely love it and it makes them feel secure....my LO settled immediately after being put in and slept like a babe (no pun intended....mostly, LOL)
desitin is essentially dressed up zinc oxide cream, so i would buy the cheaper generic zinc oxide cream...if needed, ask pharmacist again...and something they usually don't tell you...it is a moisture barrier to protect a rashy bum...BUT as such, they will also keep moisture IN if it is there, so be sure if you use it that your baby's butt is perfectly dry b4 applying...i have found plain old baby wash by johnson and johnson to be great, you can use it for baby skin and hair, and it gentle on skin and not that expensive, if you can find a generic that has the same ingredients, go for it....
LOTS of diapers if using disposables, not too many newborn, your baby may be big and not wear them long or at all...and don't open them until baby gets here in case you need to exchange sizes...a little exp, but i suggest pampers swaddlers, they are the only ones we have used so far that have NOT leaked even once...huggies leaked like crazy btw, esp urine..need baby washclothes and towels, probly get by with a couple at first bc you won't need to bathe baby to often--wipes are great, but if baby has a sensititive bum, like ours, you may need extra washclothes to use for awhile instead of wipes...but i would wait and see on the extras, you may not need them, and if necessary, you can always get by with washing baby with your towels and such, it is just a little more difficult because they are so much bigger, etc..also, get just a few if you don't get them as gifts-- a few 0-3 onesies in case your babe does not fit the nb sizes...i would NOT buy a lot of actual clothes at this point, because u will find that onesies are the most convenient, esp at home, but we use them on the go too; most are made to be rather cute nowadays anyways...just keep in mind they grow fast at this age, so you will have plenty of time for more clothesy items in a few months...if your baby is due in summer onesies are the ultimate; if in winter, you may opt for some of the 'sleep and plays' in the right material for your climate instead...and
if you are bottlefeeding, i would only buy a few of the bottles that you want to use to see if baby likes them too; we used avent for about 2 weeks, then tried the ventaire advanced (which is what i really wanted her to use anyway!) and she took to them immediately; latched on like they were made for her little mouth (not so well with the avents, even though they didn't cause probs, she just worked better with the ventaires); and if u know what formula u want to use buy a small amt to see if baby can tolerate it (they say give any change a week b4 deciding); u can go with a part one you want or the one the hosp uses....i do know that costco (i think) and sam's club (i know)sells generic baby formula; maybe even walmart, etc...i was using enfamil with lipids and it was very expensive and went fast! found generic at sams that has exact same ingredients, i wanted the lipids in it bc it is found in breastmilk, so i was set on the enf lipil...the generic caused NO probs when we switched, she didn't even skip a beat and it is CRAZILY cheaper than enfamil; pays for the membership in noooo time; they also carry diapers and wipes and such, but i haven't checked those out yet...other than them, cheapest i have found is the super large boxes of diapers at babesrus---btw, have heard that there is a generic for pretty much any formula you choose, you can compare the ingredients easily by comparing the cans--everything and amt in it is listed right on label...not a necessity, but i also LOVE my snuzzler (i think it is made by kiddopotamus too) for keeping newborns from slumping or head from bobbing...you can get them from babies r us, probably other places as well; our INFANT seat still swallows our daughter without it...plus it is a little extra padding--more comfy; she likes to nap in her car seat...she actually slept in the darn thing at night for about 2 weeks.....ick; anyways, i am new at this too, and if i can help another new mom that was as confused as i was, i wouldn't mind at all, you can email me if you have any ?s u think i can answer at tonnie_rnATyahooDOTcom..good luck, and just remember, if your budget is really, really tight, you can get by without a lot of things by being creative , such as using rolled up blankets on side of babys head in car seat, etc...OH and you need something safe for baby to sleep in, be careful if buying a used crib; make sure they are up to current safety standards and nothing even close to antique! if you want to know some more things i found wonderful but not absolutely necessary, let me know that too....hth, gl

she had diarrhea for about 5-7 days, caused a rash, then GONE, i guess she was adjusting...of course at the time we had no idea what was going on!LOL)
