How and when should I stop swaddling/wrapping my baby to sleep?
Hi there. My baby is almost 5 months old and we still swaddle/wrap her when she goes to sleep. She has a habit of moving her arms about and waking herself up, so we swaddle her so she can sleep more soundly. She does like to be swaddled and we find she settles much easier when she is wrapped up as well.
But I would have thought by 5 months a baby's startle reflexes would have diminished and we wouldn't need to wrap her anymore? Two of my friends have babies that are a few weeks younger than my little girl, and they no longer swaddle their babies.
So when should I stop swaddling her? And how should I go about breaking this habit? Should it be a gradual procedure or do we just stop wrapping her straight up?

The startle reflex is not the only reason to swaddle a baby. Swaddling them gives them the feeling of being cuddled, making them sleep easier. If your daughter sleeps well with the swaddle there is no need to stop. I still swaddle my six month old. It is in no way harmful to her to keep swaddling so you don't need to stop.
