Swaddle Me Preemie
Swaddling your baby?

We just had our 5th baby and she was 5 weeks premature due to an emergency induction because of no amniotic fluid. Luckily she was a good weight (5 pounds 11 oz) and relatively healthy except for some weight loss and jaundice which required being under the lights. At the hospital she was constantly swaddled to help with her body temp and help her feel secure. I never went through this with any of my others (even my other preemie) so I don't know how long I should continue swaddling her with her arms tucked in...I worry about developmental delays all ready since she is a preemie. During the day should I keep her arms out and only put them in at night?
When should I stop swaddling all together?

I will talk to her ped about it next week but just wondered what others moms have done.
Thanks!
Mom to 5...4 girls 1 boy

You can swaddle whenever you feel like it or whenever she may want/need it. Swaddling is for comfort as well as warmth. It's good to swaddle when you put babies down at night because it keeps them still on their back and they tend to sleep just a little bit longer (babies tend to startle themselves w/ their own arms and legs). When she's fussy she may need to be swaddled so she feels secure. She may just like to hang out swaddled. You can use this from day 1 to year 1. You tuck the arms but can leave the legs loose, you don't HAVE to have them tucked up with her but can have them just covered. I put my girl in a swaddle at night for bed. She hasn't been fussy enough to try swaddling her to comfort her. I learned good swaddling techniques and other comforting methods watching "Happiest Baby On The Block". You can buy the DVD or the Le Leche League can teach you more about it as well...

Swaddling will have nothing to do w/ developmental delays. Obviously you don't leave her wrapped up like a little burrito 24/7. She's going to have bath time, tummy time and awake time to spend with you to work on stimulation, muscle development and other interaction.
