How do I pump enough milk to not have to give formula?
I would like to give my daughter exclusively breast milk and she nurses great, but there is one problem. I can't pump enough milk to give her enough to get her through my work day. I hear stories about women pumping three to four ounces per session (sometimes each breast), but I'm usually only able to get one once per breast per session. I pump every two to four hours while I'm at work and breastfeed exclusively when I'm with her. I use a Medela Pump In Style Original at work. Any ideas or suggestions? What worked for you?
Yes some women can pump 3-4 oz but they are the exception, rather than the rule. If you can't pump more often at work then you have two options:
1) Pump more when you are home, and on the weekends
2) Encourage your daughter to reverse cycle by co-sleeping. Most babies can go 8 or 9 hours without breastfeeding -this can either be during the day or during the night the baby probably doesn't care (not that I advise forcing a baby to sleep through the night)
You can also try some herbs but I wouldn't imagine you will get much more.

Most moms who are nursing full-time are able to pump around 1/2 to 2 ounces total (for both breasts) per pumping session. Moms who pump more milk per session may have an oversupply of milk, or may respond better than average to the pump, or may have been able to increase pump output with practice. Many moms think that they should be able to pump 4-8 ounces per pumping session, but even 4 ounces is an unusually large pumping output.
