Will I always feel lightheaded after giving blood?
I gave blood for the first time yesterday, and afterwards I felt pretty lightheaded and had to lay down with my feet in the air at the Red Cross. This morning I also felt a little woozy in the shower (and had to sit down), but felt fine after that. The nurses at the Red Cross said that sometimes first timers have more of a reaction? Is that true, or will I always feel very faint afterwards?
Oh, and it only took me 5 minutes to fill up the blood bag (1 pint), and it takes most people 10-15 minutes. Do you think that's part of it?
If it makes any difference to know this, I'm 17, about 123 lbs, 5'6", my BP was 96/68, and my iron was 13.4.
your blood pressure drops when you lose volume. if you dont have good pressure, oxygenated blood isnt getting to your brain as good, so you get lightheaded.
this is common with donating blood, especially if you are small in stature or already have low b/p.
and yes, if you filled up the bag fast, then that could make you feel that sudden loss of blood pressure more.
