BREASTFEEDING MOMS: What do I need to start breastfeeding?
I'm looking for tips and advice from mothers who have breastfeed before:
Like do I need to invest in a pump? if so which ones?
Should I buy nursing bras and pads?
I just want to be prepared, what do I need besides a pair of breasts?
Also any other additional advice will be greatly appreciated. I want to solely breastfeed, wish me luck. THANKS LADIES.
Well, what do you NEED - nothing really besides, like you said a pair of breasts, but some things are helpful:
You'll want nursing pads for leaky milk - Lansinoh disposable are the best I've found.
Nursing bras are nice to have, but in the beginning, I found them kind of difficult especially because in the beginning you'll feel like baby wants to eat ALL the time, and it just seemed like a lot of fumbling (Now, I wear my regular clothes and a nursing bra all the time). I liked the nursing tanks - you can buy them at Target. They were nice, too because for the first few weeks my t-shirts and stuff still didn't fit very well - the camis were very comfortable and easy-access for baby.
Later on, you might also want to pick up a few nursing tops. They are nice for when we have to go somehwere where I'd like to be especially discreet when nursing.
Take nursing pads to the hospital with you in case your milk comes in... mine came in the day we left the hospital.
If you want to solely breastfeed, you shouldn't introduce a bottle until baby is 5-6 weeks old, so you won'y need a pump until then, if at all.
It's hard in the beginning, and you'll feel like you're constantly nursing... don't give up, and don't give formula, even if your milk doesn't come in for a few days, let baby suck because they will get colustrum which has all the antibodies they need.
Relax, and enjoy the many hours you will spend breastfeeding in the beginning because it goes by fast. A rocking chair is also nice to have. If you buy one, buy a comfy one because you'll probably spend a lot of time in it nursing your baby.
