37 weeks and some pain behind my nipple...?
I'm at 37 weeks pregnant, and I've experienced some pain behind my left nipple today. I compared the left breast to the right breast and they seem to feel the same from the outside (with I guess the milk ducts expanding and getting ready for the little guy) but the left one is so sensitive. It's almost as though someone is pinching it from the inside. The outside is sensitive, too, so I've been wearing a soft cotton bra, though I definitely need a nursing bra probably in a bigger size. Does anyone know if this might be a sign labor is coming soon, or just that milk is coming soon? I see my doc on Thursday - is there a reason to be more concerned? Thank you.
I'd say your guess about the ducts expanding is right on the money. You might be able to express a bit of milk from your breast at this point. Those systems have been working for awhile to get ready for your little one .. the colostrum is most likely forming for the first few feedings until your regular milk comes in a few days after you deliver. Now is the time to get a nursing bra too, although you can wait until you get home too! I'd get one in your normal size but make sure it has 5 to 10% spandex or lycra .. your breasts will change sizes all day long!
I'd still mention it to your doctor this week .. especially because it seems painful.
