Security blanket for recuse puppy okay?
Our newest family member a 7 month old rescued Golden Retriever has a red polar fleece blanket he carries EVERYWHERE except on walks and only because we won't let him! He sleeps with it under his chin and sucks on it until he goes to sleep. When we put it in the wash (it was all dribbly) he was very unsettled and searching for it everywhere. He was badly abused in his previous home and separated from his sister. Is it okay for him to keep this blanket? He drops it when he is playing but never lets it get out of his sight, it seems like almost an obsession. I am talking to a behaviourist is couple of days but would like advice/opinions.
That blanket is his only security right now. You just got him. Let him have his blanket. I believe when he is more settled with you he won't need it anymore. It is an obsession right now. He's hanging on for dear life to the only stable & steady thing in his life. That blanket never hurt him, people did. And that blanket may be his only link to his sister. It gives him comfort right now. I don't think you need to spend money on a behaviorist. I think he will outgrow it when he feels more settled in his new home. He is just insecure right now. You need to reassure him that he won't be going anywhere else & that this is his forever home. And that he need never worry again about being abused.
That part of his life is over for good. Just love him, reassure him & I'll bet within the next few months that blanket won't be so important to him anymore, you will be.
