Jumpers bad for babies?
Someone told me that jumpers (like the Fisher Price Rainforest Jumper) are actually bad for babies' motor development? I thought motor development was their whole purpose. Does anyone know more about this? Has anyone ever heard that?
If they were truly unsafe, they would stop making them. My son had one, and he started cruising at 9 months, and walked independently at 10.
We had the Johnny-Jump-Up, the kind that you hang in a doorway. My son mainly used it to support himself as he walked in large circles, twisting the rope up. Then when it was so twisted he could only touch with his tiptoes, he would lift his feet up off the ground and giggle like crazy when he spun in the opposite direction.
I think the main problem with the jumpers is the same problem that people have with the walkers- lack of proper supervision and misuse. They're not meant to be mechanical babysitters, and they're not meant for the kid to be stuck in for hours on end. They are also not marketed to magically teach kids special skills ahead of schedule. Some people think that is what they are for, and it's those people (and their poor, poor babies) that have problems.
My son had an insane amount of upper body strength at birth. My theory is that it's because of the position he was in at birth (frank breech). He didn't have the whole weight of his body pressing on his neck and shoulders like most babies do. So the result was that he rolled over for the first time at exactly one month, and by 1 week he could hold his head up as good as his 2 month old cousin could. Anyway, he was try to crawl at 4 months, and was getting very frustrated with his legs. The leg muscles just weren't as good as his arms. So we bought the jump up, padded him in with towels, and set the height so that he could push against the floor to lift his body.
Within a month, he was able to pull himself to a hands and knees position and rock there, and by 6 months, he was crawling EVERYWHERE.
He was an example of a baby who was greatly helped by the jumper. He would have stayed in it all day if I let him, but I tried to limit it to only like 20 minutes at a time. And some days we didn't use it at all. And he was never just left in there while we were all somewhere else. Someone was always in the room with him.
