Sfumato - The Concept
Sfumato was an important pillar of the Renaissance (14th-17th centuries) painting. With no color extremes, the style extends a subtle moderation to a picture. Right brush strokes, matched with balanced lighting effect, are its essentials. The famous Italian Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519) first used the term 'sfumato,' derived from the Italian word 'sfumare,' meaning to evaporate or to fade out. The Latin source is 'fumare' implying to smoke. It is a fine art style, which involves the blurring or the softening of pointed outlines by delicately and gradually blending two tones together. The thin glazes give an illusion of depth or three-dimension to the image.
The Artist and the Artworks
The most famous and the strongest example of sfumato is da Vinci's Mona Lisa (1503-06). Her mysterious smile, gaze, the dream-like rocky background, including her identity have been given an edge with the style. For the painting, the artist selected unifying mid-tones, especially the blues, greens, and earths. He avoided luminous colors, which could break the color harmony. The mid-tones created, imparted a subdued flavor to the picture. Sfumato introduces further subtlety to the paint impression and the illumination of the portrait. With the competent technicality behind, Mona Lisa smiles at the viewer with her hands folded serenely on a ledge in her front.
The Details
Moderate colors, especially the earth shades, are the foundation for the sfumato oil painting technique. With neutral grays and browns for the under painting, glazes can continue at earthy greens, blues, and browns, all staying within a similar tonal range. This gives a monochromatic touch to a painting. For uniformity with subdued, contrasting shades, complimentary colors, and intense paints such as bright reds are avoided. Black and white help adapt tones within the colors, dilute the shades, while ensuring some variation. Dark umber browns aid illustrate the objects at distance.
Applying paint in the transparent layers of glazes over a solid under painting is the best mode for a smoky and hazy illusion. Glazes are oil paints, diluted to a watery consistency with the help of a thinning agent. After the under painting is entirely dry, glaze is applied, allowing the layers to dry in between. Depending on the environmental temperature, it may take several days for each layer to dry completely.
When painting facial features, distinct outlines are avoided and very little definition between shapes is molded. The features are blended using variations in color tone. For shadows, dark browns are used, while hues are also flirted with for illusionary effects. Burnt umber & ochre are employed for lips ruling out red, while moss green and burnt umber are applied for eyes instead of blues.
