Bumper or no bumper..........?
My husband and I are expecting a baby in Feb. and we're starting to register for the baby shower.
I've heard from a few friends that crib bumpers aren't safe because they can cause suffocation. I was planning on just registering for sheets and a bed skirt but my SIL went berserk and said that the crib bumpers prevent the baby from getting stuck in the crib slats and that they're perfectly safe...otherwise the stores wouldn't sell them.
Anyway I saw that they make a breathable crib bumper, would that be a reasonable option? Which is better with our without the bumper? It seems more logical to go without and I want my baby to be safe... so what all you moms think?
I bought a breathable baby bumper for my son when he was about 3 months and started to roll over in his crib. I was told not to have regular bumpers in the crib because of the risk of sids but when my son started rolling over, he kept getting his legs caught in the crib slats and would cry. This bumper is much safer and you can keep it in the crib until they are old enough to come out of the crib. They can't use it as leverage to get out of the crib once they can stand because it will just lay flat. My son doesn't get his legs caught any more and he doesn't even realize it is there. They have them in all kinds of colors. We went with a baby blue color and then just had fitted sheets in several different patterns to match it. They are expensive at $30 but you could ask for it on your registery for your baby shower. Good luck!
