Your opinion of "child leashes"?
What is your opinion of those leashes for children (I don't know what they are called but they look like a back back with a leash so the kid doesn't run off. Some people say it's for safety and that's what matters, some say it is degrading for the kid, some say it's ok for toddlers but not older kids. What do you think? Pros? Cons?
Cons: The initial cost and the limited designs.
Pros:
-Saved lives. No matter how well you hold your child's hand, they can get loose. In a crowded parking lot, next to a street, it can be deadly. I'll find some of the news stories I have found in the past about the under 4 crowd dying from 'getting loose' from their parent's hand.
-Less likely to be abducted. In a crowded scenario (think airport or amusement park) you have a lifeline between you and your child.
-Less likely to dawdle behind and get hit by a car when crossing the street. In old days, they used to put a string on the under 6 crowd usually because they would dawdle and wander. It lets you know when they're falling behind, and if you have more than one child then it can be a lifesaver.
-Less likely to wander into the flow of traffic in a parking lot and die.
-Less likely to wander out of sight. Where we go walking and hiking, when she wants to run around, there are cougars in that area and I don't trust her out of sight, not even past a bush. While I do keep her close, this gives an extra security to make sure she doesn't go too far, and a visible connection to any hunter.
-Less likely to run up to a dog to pet the dog.
Add: -I've heard doctors say that when a parent holds their child by the hand and lifts them up, or pulls them, that it can hurt the shoulder and hand. Our doctor was pleased to see the harness, since it's a safer hold in her opinion.
This is a tool to be able to keep better control of your child. You don't use it in place of holding hands or teaching them not to run off, you use it as a safety net, an extra 30 seconds to grab them if they get into a dangerous situation.
It is not degrading. Honestly, it's been used on so many kids over the centuries that if it was degrading we'd see therapists talking about it by now. Most children see it as a security blanket. I've met more outgoing children who were on a leash as compared to a hand or mom hanging behind them, because they know mom or dad is right there.
But to me, calling it degrading is like calling a babyseat degrading. This is a safety tool the way I use it, and I'm going to keep using it, because the number of stories about toddlers DEAD who were holding their parent's hand then got loose... I'm sorry. If it IS degrading it's worth the trade-off.
But the fact is, I've never heard of any child saying it was degrading. The last link is the harness my daughter uses when I feel there's a risk. When she's not wearing it, she cuddles it and loves on it. She loves to wear it, and goes up to people to show them her Elmo. It's her own Elmo and she adores it. When I've taken it out she helps me put it on, and she wants to keep it on when we come home. That's not degrading shame.

"Police said the two-year-old boy may have walked out in front of the car before being thrown into the air and landing on it."
That's far more damaging I think.
On the less gruesome side, I've had workers at stores come up and thank me for keeping my daughter under such control when she's had a harness on. People look at things when they shop, and either they don't pick up their child or they think they can look away for a minute and that's all it takes. My husband has to deal with kids as old as 6 years old getting away from their parents and getting themselves in dangerous situations in the store. It's not a playground, and if the child does not stay by their parent's side then they don't belong there. By about 5 though, every child I've watched didn't need a connector. They stayed with me or they stayed home. If I had one who had something developmentally wrong or never learned the lesson, I might use it as a punishment to embarrass him, but like I said, never had to. And younger than that, it's more safety.
But it's too easy to find children under 4 killed, and I've even watched 4-6 year olds wander into traffic in parking lots, dawdle behind their parents while walking in a crosswalk (my friend died in a crosswalk, they're not as safe as folks like to think), and dawdle behind while their parents jay-walked. The parents are usually busy with younger siblings and expect the 5 year old to stay by the car. Oh, sure, the kid gets in trouble... but that's like getting after a child for playing with matches. It only takes one to burn the house down. Prevention is the key.
So those are my thoughts. Sorry it's long-winded. Since all my links are also on another question, I'm linking to that question. There's about 10 stories I found that I gave, but there's more than that out there.
