Are shoulder straps needed for infant car seats?
My wife and I are going to have our first child in October and we're looking at car seats. We have a 1989 Nissan Pulsar and the back seats don't have shoulder straps. Just the waist straps. Will that be a problem with car seats? should I go looking for a newer car?
No the shoulder strap isn't needed.
Its probably safer to use a lap only belt than a shoulder combo belt with a free sliding buckle. And from experience the shoulder belt just pulls the seat out of alignment very slowly. LATCH/UAS the "new" way of installing carseats doesn't have anything like the shoulder belt.

he lap part of the belt must hold the safety seat firmly in place. To make it tight, push the safety seat down into the seat cushion while you tighten the belt around it. Push down on it with your full weight to get the belt really tight (B) (D).
To check for a tight fit, pull the safety seat forward and push it from side to side. If the belt loosens (C) or the base of the safety seat slides forward or sideward more than an inch, your child may not be well protected.
