Question about freezing breastmilk?
My question is can you freeze breastmilk that is already refrigerated or do you have to freeze while warm directly after pumping? I already have all the stuff to do it (Medela freezer bags) I just have a surplus in the fridge already and wondered if I can start freezing it. Thanks!
You can def. freeze it after refrigerating first. In fact, most websites would say you can refrigerate it up to the time limit (usually 8 days on most sites) before deciding to freeze it. I usually try and freeze it a bit earlier on than this just to be safe, but you can do whatever you are comfortable with. I have never read anywhere that you need to pasturize older milk, and I have researched the topic extensively.
When I chill milk before freezing, I have the problem that the fat sticks to the container - I usually pour the milk into the bag and then run the closed container under warm water until the fat melts off. Then I add that to the bag, close it up, and stick it in the freezer (laying it flat for easier storage). The special freezer bags are indeed better for storage. They are sterilized, tear less easy, and specially made to prevent fats from adsorbing onto the plastic in the freezer. I would encourage you to continue using the special bags are you are already doing.
