Badger Basket Toy Box
When trying to find the perfect gift for a 21 year old these days, the impact of our celebrity culture has brought a whole new market for the perfect coming-of-age present. Trends come and go, certainly, but what you may have bought as 21st birthday gifts a generation ago almost certainly would not be welcomed now. And I blame Katie Price. Just let me explain......
Celebrity culture is so ingrained in our current society that some girls actually leave school with no further an aspiration than to marry a rich guy so that they can constantly afford their designer clothes, St. Tropez tans and Mulberry bags.
It has been reported that when surveyed, more young women in their late teens or older would rather be Katie Price than someone like Rachel Riley, the co-host of Countdown. Rachel is a stunning woman so it isn't a case of brains over beauty (and I've always felt that Katie Price's beauty is an acquired taste anyway), but what impressionable girls see is a woman making multi-millions through a good agent rather than good work. In their mind, there lies the quickest and easiest way to wealth.
Ask any teen who Emily Pankhurst or Amelia Earhart are. Both were strong, determined women who changed lives and our society through their actions; remembered through history as fantastic role models for girls. Then think of Katie Price. Will we even know who she is in ten years time, let alone a hundred? And what is she famous for? The obvious, a few books and perfumes. Hardly life-changing, yet this is what young girls aspire to, which is very disturbing.
Part of the reason is the media. In the last twenty years, media and advertising have realised that though teens and young adults may not have, or earn, much money, they can access it through their parents. And because they are so impressionable it is easier to influence them through creative adverts than their cynical elders. Perhaps this is why a typical twenty-one year old nowadays is so savvy. They may not know how to cook themselves a meal but they could probably text three of their friends whilst straightening their hair and playing 'Just Dance' on their Wii.
So what do you buy this new breed of twenty-one year old? Previous generations would have been married with kids by this age so presents would probably have been a new apron or spanner set. The young ones of 2010 would love anything to do with their appearance, such is their commitment to how they look. Therefore, jewellery is a safe bet; their own 'celebrity' perfume or something like silver-plated make-up brushes The guys would appreciate a tankard and beer set, speakers or an amp for their iPhone/MP3 player or some football memorabilia (perhaps time hasn't moved on that fast for men!).
Of course, it is a generalisation to say that every 21 year old wants to be a glamour girl or WAG. Plenty of young women would find Ruth Badger an inspiration; Mary Portas or Deborah Meade. Women who have started from nothing but proven their worth as entrepreneurs. This word, unfortunately, gets associated with Katie Price but she's a different kind of entrepreneur - not in the same league.
21 year olds have the world at their feet, and although they are legally adults, they are still gaining life experience. They still like presents come birthday time and will still flock like birds when the Christmas roast is on the table, though they may be suffering from a hangover as they eat it. Taking anything technological out of the equation (which does not and cannot stay static) most presents and gifts will stand the test of time. What young woman does not enjoy make-up - either now or a generation ago? Which young man would not have liked a tankard full of lager whether here and now or in your dad's day?
Kids grow up and rebel through their teens then start to level out in their early twenties. This is part of nature, only marginally affected by the outside influences of each generation so it's comforting to know that you can't go far wrong if you stick with something simple as a birthday gift. Girls like to be pampered and spoilt, men like to feel macho and challenged.
As trends come and go, will Suri Cruise or Brooklyn Beckham be the role models of the next generation? Or will the relentless celebrity circus have moved on?
