Baby Dresser Changing Table
Is it safe to paint a changing table and dresser?
I recently was bought a white crib for my new baby on the way, money is kinda tight so I decided to use an old little dresser for her and I'm going to buy a used changing table off craigslist. However, the crib is white and the dresser and changing table are darkish brown/wooden. I was wondering if I used non lead paint would painting the changing table and dresser be safe? Is there any kind of certain paint that is recommended for painting baby stuff? I want to be sure because I don't want to risk hurting her in anyway.
I also ask because I wanted to paint her name on the dresser as there's a little space where it would look cute.
Also, if It is ok to paint them, do I just go ahead a paint or do I need to do something to the furniture first?

Any paint available today to the consumer is all lead free. Lead was outlawed back in the 70's.
To get the best finish you want to use oil based (alkyd) paint. Latex paints do not flow like alkyd paints. You will see brush strokes using latex.
Alkyds give you a much tougher more durable finish. It is a little higher VOC paint but those dissipate very quickly. (24-48 hours)
Give the piece a light sanding with about 220 grit sandpaper then make sure entire surface is clean and dust free.
A very strong suggestion, do not go to a box store to get your paint. Go to a real paint store, all they do is sell paint and the employees were not in the plumbing dept last week and lumber the week before that.
They know paint and will be able to help you make the best choices to fit your circumstances.
