Will my baby suffocate???
Hello,
my son is 8 months old and my first baby. For the past month or so, when I put him down for a nap, or bedtime, he rolls onto his side, grabs his crib bumper, and stuffs his face into it, falling asleep. I get so scared. When I see him doing this, I of course move him. But, sometimes when I go to check on him (which I almost do obsessively now, because I'm scared) he's back in the same position, with his face between the bumper and the mattress. When he very first started to turn from side to side, he slept in a cradle with bumpers, and I removed them for a week or so, because he was getting his face smooshed up against it, but he'd knock his head all the time, so I put them back, and then we got a crib. Also, he kicks ALL the time, getting his feet and legs stuck between the crib slats, so I'm not sure if removing the bumpers would be safe either. Help!
What should I do?
Hi, I too have an 8 month old who I just started putting in her crib for naps because she is a master crawler. She tends to squirm around before falling asleep. Today she fell asleep with her face in her hands right by the bumper. I check on her a lot, but I have a small house so its easy to do other things and still keep and eye on her. It is recommended to remove the bumper, blanket and any stuffed toys. But it sounds like your baby is using the bumper as a blanky or some sort of comfort device. I would keep a close eye on him. Perhaps supplement the bumper with a teddy bear. As your little guy gets bigger he will get more comfortable as will you. I know my daughter is very good at letting me know when things aren't the way she wants them. Just keep an eye and an ear on her:)
