wean baby from breast?
i would like to wean my 7 months old baby, soon. if possible gradually.but she won't take the bottle.i tried every nipple, every feeding time,different people(husband, grandparents, in-laws).once in a while she will take 1 or 2 ounces but all the other times she will just chew on the nipple and refuses to drink.(she doesn't take a pacifier either)i nurse her to sleep (and nap time most of the time).can't seem to change that so easily. i'm a stay at home mom so since i am always around her it is even harder.do i have to end up weaning her cold turkey? i am afraid if she knows that she can have the breast sooner or later she won't ever take the bottle.it doesn't need to be a bottle.the same goes for a sippy cup, or regular cup.she drinks a little(more out of a regular cup) but never more then 2 ounces(after an already skipped meal).does anybody have any tricks up their sleeves?
Your dilemma sounds all too familiar.
My best advice would be to start introducing your daughter to a sippy cup full of water. My daughter hated drinking breastmilk (or formula) from the sippy cup but when I offered her water she took to it immediately (wouldn't take a bottle or soother either). I started my daughter on water from the sippy cup at around that age and it has worked well for me because I have never used a bottle and when it came time to introduce cows milk she took it from the sippy cup without any problems at all...which makes me wonder if I hadn't tried more whether she would have eventually accepted expressed breastmilk in it as well.
In terms of weaning, I am currently going through this myself. My daughter is 13 months however and I have been doing a very slow and gentle approach to it...and I'm loving this decision. She has also been nursed to sleep since she was born. I have chosen to start by night weaning first, which means I have cut out nursing my daughter back to sleep through out the night. This has been VERY successful and she now sleeps through the night! Which is awesome considering prior to night weaning she would not sleep more than 3 hours. I have also started very gradually teaching her to fall asleep off of the breast...I still nurse her until she is almost asleep but let her drift off to sleep on her own. My plan is to decrease how much I feed her slowly and increase how "awake" she is before I lay her down to sleep on her own (with me still in the room to comfort her if need be). Ofter she is very much awake when I unlatch her and it takes her a while, but she eventually goes to sleep without much of a fuss at all. My next step is to wean her at naptime, then I'll do her bedtime feed and my final feed will be her morning feed.
I have to say...things are going sooooo well. I think this has a lot to do with her age. I had tried similar approaches when she was a bit younger with little success (although I don't know how determined I was to make things work). I think she is far more aware of what is happening and able to follow directions better at this age. For instance she knows that "night night" means lay your head on the pillow and go to sleep. I also think she is sleeping much better now because she has just started walking and is pooped by the end of the day. I know you say your little one is 7 months old but if you want to do a gradual approach to weaning (teaching her to fall asleep without the breast, take a sippy cup, etc., etc., ) it may be to your advantage to go slow and not rush things because you can do things with minimal upset to everyone. Also, if you wait until they are a bit older they are more reliant on solid food and thus do not need to be reliant on breastmilk or formula...you can skip this step and go straight to cow's milk.
Best of luck...what has made the biggest difference for me was that I sat down and figured out what my gradual approach was going to be and wrote it out step by step and have followed through with everything I have wanted to accomplish. I haven't rushed her and use her cues to tell me when she is ready for the next step. Hope this helps.
