Are bicycles from super stores really that bad?
I am a woman, 5'11 tall and 150lbs in weight and I am looking to get a bicycle for the purpose of fitness, good road travel, and possibly race in a charity event (one day if ever). Plus I have a baby and would like one that will accomidate a child seat.
I went to a bicycle shop and most of the bikes they sold are Trex bikes. Granted, they are great bikes, money is an object to me and spending $450 on a bike is hard to comprehend. Until I know for sure that getting a bike that expensive (to me) is the right move I considered going to Walmart and getting a bike there instead but walmart gets a lot of flack about their bikes. Are those bikes really that bad? And is it possible to find a bike at a major retailer that will accomidate my height?
Well, it depends on how much you actually use they bike, and if you mind the weight. Bike's pricing is determined mostly by how much they weight, and the type of metal that the frame is constructed of. Wal-mart may sell cheap bikes, but they are quite heavy compared to more professional ones (The ones you most likely saw at the bicycle shop). Since you plan to work out on it, and don't want to invest too much, Wal-mart bikes should be alright. However, if you don't mind, maybe you should look into getting a used bike from a flea market, or pawn shop.
As for the child/baby seat thing, you could get an adaptive seat for the baby, however, you might consider a trailer instead (One of those things that attach to the rear wheel with a seat on it, for toddlers) since the child will grow fast.
In conclusion, I recommend buying a used bike, to save money, and get a descent bike. Furthermore, a bike can easily be adapted to carry or pull-along a child (Unless it is very professional and is not designed for casual use)
